Project of the Year Award
Purpose: To be awarded to the municipality which, in the opinion of the Awards committee constructs a major and complex public works or utilities project, which deserves special merit because of its unique features or complexity relative to the resources of the community.
Eligibility: Municipality must be a member of PWABC/APWA. The project must have been “substantially completed” and available for public and/or agency use within two calendar years prior to nomination. If a project has multiple phases or segments, then “substantially completed” will be construed as that point when the final phase or segment is 90% completed and available for public and/or agency use.
A project may only be nominated once for recognition as Project of the Year.
Selection Criteria:
- of significant benefit to the community
- completed substantially by the year of the award
- on time and budget
- provides an environmental or social benefit
- innovation in design
- success of public participation program
- safety record
- financing complexity
- environmental protection measures taken
- quality of final works
- complexity
Nomination Process: Nominations of projects can be made by the managing public agency or PWABC/APWA members. Must also include support or either the community, consultant or contractor.
Deadline: August 15
Presentation: A designated representative of the public agency, contractor, and consultant are presented a plaque at the Awards banquet held at the Annual Technical Conference.
Public Works Week - Community Celebration Award (Population Under 100,000)
Purpose: To be awarded to municipality/agency or region (with a population under 100,000) that use Public Works week to educate and inform the public about the essential role that public works plays in the quality of their community life. Equally important is promoting the choice of public works as a career choice for the working force of the future and recognizing those who currently serve in these crucial public roles.
Eligibility: Member municipalities, agencies or regions (below 100,000 pop.) of PWABC are eligible.
Selection Criteria:
- Public Outreach – What spectrum of people were reached?
- Education – Was there an educational component?
- Events Held – How many days of events were held during the week?
- Staff Involvement – Was there a large involvement of Public Works staff and Union personnel?
- Political Involvement – Was there a large political presence involved in the Public Works Week activities?
- Creativity of the event
Nomination Process: Nominations may be made by an individual member, municipality, entity or non-member, and should include a nomination form and documentation supporting the purpose of the award.

Excellence in Snow and Ice Control Awards
Purpose: The PWABC Excellence in Snow and Ice Control Award was established to promote excellence in the management and administration of public works snow and ice operations. To promote the best practices in snow and ice removal while minimizing environmental impacts.
Eligibility: Any public works agency actively involved in snow and ice removal and operations. Public works is defined as the physical structures and facilities that are developed, owned, and maintained by public agencies to house governmental functions and provide water, power, waste disposal, transportation, and similar public services, in accordance with established public policy. APWA membership is not required. No sitting member of the subcommittee or the member’s respective agency shall be eligible for the award.
Selection Criteria: The award winner(s) is selected by the PWABC Award Committee. Criteria to be used in the selection process can be found on the Supporting Data Form.
Nomination Process: Nominations can be made by the managing public agency or the individuals. Submittal should include a nomination form and supporting documentation that clearly addresses the categories outlined on the supporting data form.
Deadline: August 31, 2018
Presentation: The winner will be recognized and receive their award during the PWABC Awards Night and Banquet which is held at the Fall Technical Conference and Trade Show.
Supporting Data: Listed below are the six categories and criteria each nomination should include in its documentation. The nomination should address each category in the order shown below and expand with detailed information to explain the agency’s programs accomplishments in these categories. The agency should include and expand on any sustainable program or solutions for each category as well. Agencies that do not have programs in all of the categories listed are encouraged to apply, noting accomplishments in all the categories applicable, and stating if they do or do not have a certain program in place.

Innovations Award - On hold for 2017

Factors taken into consideration for selection include:

The Public Works Association of British Columbia (PWABC) recognizes that staff in municipalities are actively developing and inventing creative and better ways to get the job done. This attitude is essential to the way we improve business and accomplish our goals, as well as “doing more with less.”
PWABC will be awarding $650 in prizes to the individual(s) with the best idea of gadget related to public works developed in 2012-2013. Ideas and gadgets will be judged based on originality, potential for use in other municipalities, and value (return on investment).
Cash prizes will go directly to the staff eprsons involved and named on the winning submissions. A plaque (1st place only) will be presented at one of the municipality’s Council Meetings or at the Annual Public Works Conference in Nanaimo. All winning submissions will be displayed at the conference sp everyone can benefit from the ingenuity and innovation. The winning submissions will be asked to provide a display board.
